I bought this book as a gift for my cat. - Last night as I was preparing for bed, I turned my pillow over (a daily ritual). Exactly in the center was exposed for my approval and appreciation a gift from my 5-year old tortoiseshell: a recently-deceased young adult mouse. This is the first time Little Baby has taken the presentation of her rare success rate with mice and even worse luck with moths to such a high level!I happened upon Libby Hall s book by chance, having read a brief description of it in a mail order catalog a couple of days ago. I often prefer purchasing talking books, DVDs, and CDs from AmazonUK because they offer items not available through their US site. Thank heavens for the inexpensive, multi-region DVD players that free me from being restricted to the dreadful NTSC (Never The Same Color) video format, thus allowing me to enjoy PAL (Peace At Last) and UK-only content such as Tom Sharpe s delightful Blot on the Landscape BBC-TV series. We loaned you Bill Bryson, but he went native for 20+ years. We loaned the French David Saderis, and they were kind enough to return him to us. I think we ended up owning Allister Cook. Absolutely Fabulous is still on the air here, but our attempt to kidnap Alex Bennett and the cast of The History Boys failed even though we showered them with Tony Awards and bribes unmentionable in polite society. Maybe things do balance out in the long run in an analysis of popular culture. It is important for you to know that the overwhelming feeling in the US is that not only is the Bush regime insane: our young are being killed and maimed by the thousands in Iraq, but he is also killing and putting in harm s way so many UK soldiers, naval personnel, and journalists. Through the Internet, satellite TV, and public radio stations, we have a great deal of access to the BBC. This is not the forum for such comments, but the difference between what is reported UK journalists and that which is presented by the news outlets in the US that are controlled by less than a handful of very powerful private corporations is striking. Keep in mind that we do *not* have access to CNN International. Those who control US news and information view CNN International as possibly incindery. While the content is slightly more realistic, it still doesn t compare to what is presented by the BBC. Yet, I m sure a well-informed UK citizen worries that they are not being given all of the truth. Well, in the US we know we are not being given any truth from our mass media. There are small, obscure satellite TV channels we trust: FSTV (Free Speech TV) and WorldLink, but they are smothered by 500 other channels that provide escapism via incredibly well-produced mindless fodder that is so addictive that it satisfies the public s demand for huge, high-definition TVs with stunning 5.1 (soon to be 7.1) Dolby Surround Sound. In any event, I ve purchased Ms Hall s wonderful book from AmazonUS because I learned that the UK and US printings are identical. I did, however, learn that there is a German edition available for almost double the price, but since Little Baby doesn t need captions in four languages and, alas (like most of those who live in The Colonies--a term we Anglophiles apply to the more familiar USA acronym), she understands only English--specifically, the Northern California dialect that is remarkable for its mumbling-mangling of any word with two or more syllables and use of you know in virtually every statement or question.Even though I have not received my copy of Postcard Cats, I can truthfully state that this is a book worth buying, based upon having spent time with her wonderful Postcard Dogs.
A Keeper for all Cat Lovers - Like Libby Hall s previous three books, this collection of images of cats (not dogs, as are the previous three) is stunning. Each image is better than the previous one. Most are images of cats alone or with people, but there are also a few with dogs. Hall collaborated on this book, so it represents two collections. I highly recommend this book to all who honor and respect felines, and also recommend Hall s previous three dog-related books. My copies have been loaned and re-read many times.
